Jaipur - Forts, Palaces, Bazaars, and Pre-Holi Festivities
In the morning, we visit Amber Fort which was constructed by Maharaja Man Singh in the 17th century. He was one of the most successful generals of Mughal Emperor Akbar and a fierce warrior. The fortress perched on top of a hillock was the seat of power of the Kachhawa Rajput clan before the City Palace was constructed in Jaipur. The fort was made impregnable with battlements surrounding it. It overlooks the Maota Lake and is sprawled over the Aravalli Hills. The fort complex houses the most stunning palaces, gardens, and courtyards decorated with colourful frescos and mirrors.
A non-air-conditioned jeep ride from the base to the top of the fort and back will enhance your experience.
Following your visit to the fort, we will take you on a sightseeing tour of Jaipur City that will include a visit to the City Palace Museum. This sprawling complex of palaces, gardens, and courtyards also houses the residences of the current royal family of Jaipur. Beautifully painted doorways, exquisite paintings, and exhibits of armory, rare manuscripts, art, jewelry, textiles, and traditional handicrafts make the Palace Museum an incredible place to explore.
Stepping outside the gates of the City Palace we explore the local bazaars of Jaipur. The variety on offer is mindboggling to say the least! As we walk through the colourful streets and lanes, look past the loud and garish tat, you will see craftsmen busy in their workshops, producing and selling fine forms of local arts and crafts. Jewlery, embroidery, gota work, kinari (trims, borders and laces) and block-printed fabrics can all be found.
In the evening, visit your local host at their home to participate in pre-Holi festivity βHolika Dahanβ. A traditional bonfire that is observed by the locals to pray for all their evils to be expended in the fire (just like Holika) leaving behind what is good and pure. Besides the religious value, the festival also lends people a chance to bury their differences (if any!) and start on a fresh note by embracing each other. Later, join your host for a festive dinner. During the festivity and meal, get a unique opportunity to interact with women of the family who are educated and modern in thoughts but still continuing their efforts to keep the traditions alive. The dinner is indeed going to be a memorable one filled with joys and laughter while sharing the food which was freshly cooked.
