From the crowded cauldron of Old Delhi’s bazaars set around the giant Jama Masjid mosque to the imperial grandeur of British Delhi radiating from its landmark buildings, the capital is a compelling medley of chaos and good order.

Starting with Humayun’s Tomb – a magnificent 16th century UNESCO World Heritage Site. Commissioned by the widow of the second Mughal Emperor, Humayun, it is an outstanding monument built in the same Indo-Persian style. This was one of it’s kind monument which was commissioned by a woman for her husband and not otherwise. Indeed, the Humayun’s Tomb is one of Asia’s finest garden tombs and structurally, considered to be a pre-cursor to the Taj Mahal.
After exploring the magnificent monument in the morning, head to Nizamuddin Basti to meet with inspiring women who through their determination, resilience, and a shared vision, are actively shaping a more inclusive Delhi. Delhi, Old and New!
Today, embark on a journey through the vibrant streets of Old Delhi, where the tales of women from the Mughal era come to life. Our day begins in Shahjahanabad, the majestic city envisioned by the great Mughal Emperor Shahjahan. While Mughal history often focuses on men, our curated walk shines a light on the influential women who shaped history.
Our first stop is Chandni Chowk, a bustling market built by Jehanara, the daughter of Shah Jahan. As we explore this historic square via rickshaw, you'll encounter a 200-year-old perfume shop once patronized by royal queens. Here, you'll craft your own scent while learning about the queen who birthed a fragrance now beloved across the nation.
As we meander through the streets, we'll pass by Asia's largest spice market, delving into the significance of spices in Mughal cuisine and folklore. Along the way, we'll encounter a mosque commissioned by a queen, offering insights into the architectural prowess of women in the Mughal court.
Traversing the neighborhoods of Old Delhi, we'll delve into the intriguing world of courtesans, who wielded immense power amidst changing dynasties and rulers. Indulge your taste buds in the delectable delights of Chandni Chowk, sampling culinary treasures steeped in centuries of tradition.
Next drive through the newer part of Lutyens Delhi, stopping at the India Gate in the Rajpath – not only for a photo stop but also to observe local life. It is a fantastic spot to observe local life in this picturesque part of India’s capital.
Spend the afternoon exploring a local market that's become the go-to destination for all things wedding! The market itself is so exciting because it's an urban- rural melting pot where one can witness many subcultures of the city. Once a part of one of the ancient cities of Delhi, today Shahpur Jat is home to a farming community living harmoniously surrounded by a market that's bustling with stores of many artists, fashion designers and hip cafes. A town incredible for its UNESCO crowned sights, only a few cities can match the iconic standing that Agra boasts in the fancy of travelers the world over. You notice its majesty wraps around the luster of the Taj Mahal and the beauty of the historical architecture left as a legacy by the Mughal Empire.

Mughal emperor, Shahjahan built this architectural wonder to enshrine the mortal remains of his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal. Fashioned from white marble with semi-precious pietra dura stone inlay work, it was described by Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath Tagore as “a teardrop on the face of eternity.”
The story of Taj Mahal is never complete without knowing the vigor of Mumtaz Mahal who was also known as “the power behind the throne.”

The sites of Jaipur
The Pink City of Jaipur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. It is also amongst the most favoured destinations for shopping. The buildings in the old city were painted with an auspicious rose pink shade under the orders of Maharaja Ram Singh to welcome the Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria on their visit to India in 1876. This earned the city its famous epithet. Even today, the buildings inside the old walled city are bedecked in the blush pink hues that set it apart from other cities in the country.
After breakfast, embark on a privately guided tour of the Amber Fort. The name "amber" derives from the goddess Amba Mata (Mother Earth) worshiped by local tribes at the site prior to the building of the fort complex. This magnificent fortress palace with its richly decorated apartments is perched high on a fortified hill, and a highlight of any visit to Jaipur. The building of the fort-palace was started by Raja Man Singh, a noted Rajput general in Akbar’s army in 1600, and the architecture shows distinct Mughal influence.
From here, continue to Hawa Mahal and learn the fascinating story of “Purdah system” (Veils). This honeycomb facade in downtown Jaipur emblemizes how the royal women lived throughout the 1600s: by seeing without being seen. Through 953 inconspicuously latticed windows, Hawa Mahal—also known as the Wind Palace—was constructed following the principle of “Purdah” where royal women were forbidden to be seen by strangers. The structure was built as an extension of the City Palace in 1799 by ruler Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, so that ladies could observe the streets without showing themselves.
Continue your exploration of the city that will include a visit to the City Palace Museum. This sprawling complex of palaces, gardens, and courtyards also houses the residences of the current royal family of Jaipur. Beautifully painted doorways, exquisite paintings, and exhibits of armoury, rare manuscripts, art, jewellery, textiles, and traditional handicrafts make the Palace Museum an incredible place to explore.
In the evening, visit your local host at their home to participate in pre-holi festivity “Holika Dahan.” A traditional bonfire that is observed by the locals to pray for all their evils to be expended in the fire (just like Holika) leaving behind what is good and pure. Besides the religious value, the festival also lends people a chance to bury their differences (if any!) and start on a fresh note by embracing each other. Later, join your host for a festive dinner. During the festivity and meal, get a unique opportunity to interact with women of the family who are educated and modern in thoughts but continuing to keep the traditions alive. The dinner is indeed going to be a memorable one filled with joys and laughter while sharing the food which was freshly cooked.
